Reimaging Urban Parks

Nestleled in the Calumet Region, this park challenges the way people interact with nature and goes beyond picnics. It is home to various bike features, hiking trails, outlooks, nature play, and art installations.

The park is maintained by the Chicago Park District, Friends of Big Marsh, and a dedicated group of volunteers. If you are interested in helping Big Marsh Park continue to be a great park for all, contact us to learn more about volunteering!

Bike Trails

Big Marsh’s trails offer something to all riders. Beginners may start with the three mile multiuse trail before moving to the single track. Advanced riders can explore the pump track, big hill, and jump lines. Asphalt trails are open year-round, while dirt trails are closed when wet. No motors are allowed.

Singletrack Trail

Our singletrack trails provide an introduction to traditional mountain biking, right here in Chicago. These dirt paths are beginner friendly, though they offer more challenging features, as an option, the further the rider explores.

Best for: Low impact riding, cardio, warm-up

Pump Track

This asphalt feature provides excitement for all self-powered wheels, whether bikes, rollerblades, or skateboards. The pump track favors intermediate to advanced riders, and is a great place to practice “pumping” through any bike features. Open year round. Check for ice in winter.

Best for: Beginning- Advanced Riders, high impact riding, cardio

Jump Lines

Opening in summer of 2026, the Big Hill features 5 progressive, gravity-fed trails for beginners and experts alike. The 3 jump lines were improved in 2025. Together these 8 trails include asphalt portions for all abilities, alongside seasonal dirt trails.

Best for: Beginner riders, low impact riding, cardio, warm-up

Go Big! with Friends of Big Marsh

In 2025, more than 13,000 people participated in over 300 events at Big Marsh, and tens of thousands more enjoyed the space on their own. Participation will rise as schools, community organizations, and families discover the park’s deep value. To accommodate this growth, educational opportunities, workshops, wellness clinics, and expanded bike rental services must be realized, while also strengthening the operating capacity of Friends of Big Marsh.

Big Marsh Park will continue to expand trails and amenities, thanks to the generosity of our donors, partners, and cyclists like you!
